Canadian government invests $5M in an Indigenous-owned hemp processing plant in Elk Point, Alberta, aiming for operational status by summer 2025.
The Canadian government is investing $5M through PrairiesCan to support the construction of an Indigenous-owned industrial hemp processing plant in Elk Point, Alberta. Askiy Hemp Limited Partnership, a collaboration between Frog Lake First Nations and Logistik Unicorp, will build the state-of-the-art facility, processing 40,000 tons of hemp stalk annually. The project aims to diversify Alberta's agricultural sector, provide new revenue streams for farmers, and generate jobs; it's expected to be operational by summer 2025, directly employing over 45 people, with at least one third of these jobs expected to be filled by Indigenous Peoples.
