Cambodia's Supreme Court has upheld a two-year prison sentence for Chhim Sithar, a labor union leader who led a strike against the country's largest casino, NagaWorld, in Phnom Penh. Sithar was convicted of incitement to commit a felony in May 2023 during a strike that began in December 2021, protesting mass layoffs and alleged union-busting. NagaWorld, owned by a company controlled by the family of Malaysian billionaire Chen Lip Keong, fired 373 employees in 2021 amid financial struggles due to the pandemic. The court also upheld the convictions and sentences of eight of her fellow union members.
