A new Australian study reveals a need for a significant overhaul in how police handle sexual assault cases. Dr. Rachael Burgin, senior lecturer at Swinburne Law School, found that police rarely charge sexual offences due to insufficient investigations, with only one in seven people accused of raping a child knowing they were named as a suspect. The study used ACT Policing's 2021 cases and found that conviction and charge rates are low, necessitating improvements in police handling of sexual assault cases.
