IRS plans to overhaul compliance efforts to reduce audit disparity between Black taxpayers and others.
The IRS has taken steps to address the wide disparity in audit rates between Black taxpayers and other filers, and will more closely examine the returns of wealthy individuals and major companies. This follows a study revealing that IRS data-driven algorithms selected Black taxpayers for auditing at up to 4.7 times the rate of non-Black taxpayers. The agency plans to overhaul compliance efforts to achieve fair, equitable, and effective tax administration.
