Australian gender pay gap (15%) not solely explained by women working in lower-paying sectors; within-occupation disparities contribute to majority of gap.
New research by e61 Institute reveals that the Australian gender pay gap, at 15%, cannot be solely attributed to women working in lower-paying sectors than men. While men and women are often segregated by occupation, occupational choice alone accounts for only 20% of the gender pay gap. The study finds that women are paid less than men within the same occupation, with differences in pay within the same occupations between men and women making up the bulk of the gender pay gap.
