Wheeling installs first Safe Haven Baby Box at Wheeling Island Fire Department Station 5.

Wheeling welcomes its first Safe Haven Baby Box, a life-saving device for infants that mothers can anonymously surrender their newborns. Located at Wheeling Island Fire Department Station 5, the $16,000 climate-controlled box triggers an alarm when a baby is placed inside. Responders retrieve the infant and transport it to a hospital. A second box will be installed at the new Wheeling Fire Department headquarters on Market Street.
