12 people in California and Washington have been affected by an E. coli outbreak linked to organic walnuts sold in bulk bins at natural food and co-op stores, including Whole Foods. Seven people have been hospitalized and two have developed a dangerous kidney disease, hemolytic uremic syndrome, due to E. coli contamination. Gibson Farms Inc., based in Hollister, California, has recalled the potentially contaminated Organic Light Halves and Pieces shelled walnuts.
