India's DRDO tested the SMART torpedo release system, enhancing Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
India's Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully tested a next-generation torpedo release system, the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART), designed to enhance the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The system, which can be launched from both coasts and warships, was successfully flight-tested at around 8.30 am from a ground mobile launcher from the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. SMART, a canister-based missile system, consists of several advanced sub-systems, including a two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, and precision inertial navigation system. The system carries advanced lightweight torpedoes as payload along with parachute-based release systems and can target submarines hundreds of kilometers away, far beyond the conventional range of lightweight torpedoes.
