Columbia University President requests NYPD on campus until May 17.

Columbia University President Minouche Shafik requested the presence of the NYPD on campus until May 17, following an impasse in negotiations between university administrators and student protesters. The decision comes after nearly 100 protesters were arrested on April 30 and over 100 student protesters were arrested on April 18. The NYPD presence aims to maintain order and prevent the reestablishment of encampments.
