BBC contacts IPT over claims former journalist Kearney was spied on by PSNI during 2011 documentary investigating Northern Ireland's police watchdog.
The BBC has contacted the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) over claims that former BBC journalist Vincent Kearney was spied on by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The allegations relate to Kearney's work on a 2011 Spotlight documentary, which investigated the independence of Northern Ireland's police watchdog. The claims are part of a case already being examined by the IPT into allegations of unlawful covert surveillance by police of two other investigative reporters in Northern Ireland. The BBC has stated that "serious issues of public interest are involved", specifically the effects that surveillance may have on journalistic investigations and freedoms.
