Weardale Lithium submits planning application for a lithium extraction plant in Weardale, County Durham, aiming to create UK's first domestic lithium supply.

Weardale Lithium has submitted a planning application to Durham County Council for a lithium extraction plant at Eastgate in Weardale, County Durham. The facility will process geothermal groundwater from existing deep wells, potentially creating 10,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year and up to 125 jobs, generating an estimated £1bn of gross economic value for the region. The project aims to establish the UK's first domestic supply of lithium, currently entirely dependent on imports.
