The US Preventive Services Task Force has finalized new guidelines recommending women with average breast cancer risk begin annual mammograms at age 40. The previous recommendation stated that screenings should begin no later than age 50. The updated guidelines are based on a review of new evidence by an independent panel of experts and apply to people assigned female at birth who are at average risk of breast cancer.
