The US Department of Transportation will require new passenger cars and light trucks to have automatic emergency braking systems by September 2029, as part of an effort to save hundreds of lives and prevent thousands of injuries annually. The final rule, called the most significant safety regulation in the past two decades, aims to prevent rear-end and pedestrian collisions and reduce traffic deaths, which currently stand at around 40,000 each year.
