The UN establishes a panel to draft guidelines for mining critical minerals for electric vehicles and renewable energy.
The United Nations has established a panel to draft guidelines for mining critical minerals in high demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies. The Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals includes representatives from nearly 100 countries, nonprofit organizations, and industry groups, and aims to develop a set of global common and voluntary principles to safeguard environmental and social standards and embed justice in the energy transition. As the global shift towards clean energy drives increased demand for critical minerals, Sub-Saharan Africa, with approximately 30% of the world's proven critical mineral reserves, is positioned to play a pivotal role in this transition.
