Former Kazakhstan interior minister Erlan Turgumbayev has been arrested in relation to the deadly police crackdown on unrest in 2022 that resulted in 238 deaths. Turgumbayev was detained on charges of "abuse of power and official authority resulting in grave consequences." The unrest began in Zhanaozen on January 2, 2022, when residents protested a sharp increase in the cost of liquefied petroleum gas.
