New analysis by Infometrics shows returning GST on rates to local councils would cost the government at least $1.1bn. Infometrics chief executive and principal economist, Brad Olsen, said the government collected about this amount in GST from rates in 2022, with Auckland receiving $317m and Chatham Islands receiving $100k. If GST on rates were returned, 29 out of 78 councils across New Zealand would receive over $10m.
