Alabama A&M University plans to purchase Birmingham Southern College's campus, becoming the first public HBCU in Birmingham.

Alabama A&M University (AAMU) plans to extend an offer to purchase the campus of Birmingham Southern College (BSC), which is set to close on May 31 due to financial difficulties. If the offer is accepted, AAMU will operate the Birmingham campus as a stand-alone, independent institution under the AAMU umbrella. AAMU's move would make it the first public historically black college or university in the Birmingham area.
