Waitangi Tribunal warns repeal of Treaty obligations from Oranga Tamariki Act could harm vulnerable NZ children.
The Waitangi Tribunal has released a report warning that New Zealand's government plan to repeal Treaty obligations from the Oranga Tamariki Act could cause harm to vulnerable children. The report cautions that the repeal of Section 7AA, which requires the chief executive of Oranga Tamariki to consider the whakapapa and whanaungatanga of Māori children and families, is not based on an empirical public policy case and misrepresents the Treaty of Waitangi. The Waitangi Tribunal advises for a comprehensive review instead of a rushed repeal.
