Ships diverting around Red Sea due to Houthi attacks increase carbon emissions, complicating supply chain pollution reduction efforts.

Ships diverting around the Red Sea due to Houthi rebel attacks are releasing millions of additional tons of carbon emissions, complicating efforts by companies relying on ocean freight to reduce pollution in their supply chains. The detour, which adds at least a week to the journey between South Asia and Northern Europe, emits carbon equivalent to the pollution of about 9 million cars over the same period, according to INVERTO. The International Maritime Organization is working on a global carbon levy, but it won't come into force until 2027.
