The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has ordered the administration to compensate former Jamaat-e-Islami spokesman, Ali Mohammad Lone aka Zahid, for his illegal detention under the Public Safety Act (PSA). This is the first time the court has penalised the state for detention under the PSA, which allows authorities to detain a person without trial for up to two years. The court quashed Lone's fourth detention order in a row, directing the government to pay Rs 5 lakh in compensation for the "illegal detention".
