WhatsApp and Meta challenge India's 2021 IT Rules, threatening to cease operations if required to break encryption.

WhatsApp and its parent company, Meta, have challenged India's 2021 Information Technology Rules which require social media intermediaries to identify the originator of information. They argue that this requirement would necessitate breaking WhatsApp's encryption, compromising user privacy. If forced to break encryption, WhatsApp has threatened to cease operations in India. The Delhi High Court has listed the matter for August 14th, awaiting the transfer of other related petitions.
