Disease detectives in Chicago report a concerning trend: patients with unusual syphilis symptoms, such as vision and eye problems, headaches, and hearing loss or dizziness. In a study presented at the 2024 Epidemic Intelligence Service Conference, more than two dozen cases with these symptoms were found in Chicago last year, with nearly a third in the early stages of infection. Over two-thirds of these patients lacked typical syphilis symptoms, posing a challenge for doctors.
