27-year-old former UC San Diego grad student Yuhao Du was sentenced to 22 years and eight months in prison for attempting to grab a California Highway Patrol officer's gun during an encounter on Interstate 8 in Mission Valley in 2022. Du, who suffers from schizophrenia, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and attempting to take a firearm from a peace officer after initially pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. The gun discharged during the struggle, injuring Officer Tony Pacheco.
