54-year-old Lisa Pisano became the first patient to undergo a combined heart pump implant and gene-edited pig kidney transplant at NYU Langone Health in New York City. The two-step procedure aimed to stabilize Pisano's failing heart and end-stage kidney disease. The patient, who was not a candidate for a traditional transplant, also received a pig's thymus gland to help prevent rejection of the genetically modified kidney.
