Colombian rebels, part of the FARC dissident group who rejected a 2016 peace deal, are holding the Amazon rainforest hostage in ongoing peace talks. They control deforestation by approving or preventing logging in areas under their control, exerting pressure on the Colombian government. The Central General Staff (EMC) oversees each tree felled, while Environment Minister Susana Muhamad warns about an "historic peak" of deforestation.
