27% of Indian Himalayan glacial lakes expanded significantly since 1984, raising concerns about potential GLOFs due to climate change.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reported that over 27% of the identified glacial lakes in the Himalayas have expanded significantly since 1984, with 130 of those located in India. Satellite data covering Indian Himalayan river basins from 1984 to 2023 revealed substantial changes in the glacial lakes, with 676 out of 2,431 lakes larger than 10 hectares showing notable expansion. This trend, attributed to climate change, raises concerns about potential downstream impacts and the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
