The court exercised its power under Article 142 of the Constitution, which allows it to pass orders necessary for complete justice in any case. The Bombay High Court had previously declined a plea filed by the minor's father for terminating her pregnancy. The Maharashtra government agreed to cover the medical expenses for the abortion.
