1 in 40 UK vehicles are zero-emission, with BEV and PHEV registrations reaching close to 500k in 2023, resulting in a 50% increase in BEV use.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reports that one-in-forty vehicles on UK roads are now zero-emission, with the rise in plug-in vehicles driving the biggest growth in car ownership since 2016. Total cars on UK roads reached 35.69 million, and nearly half a million new battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles were registered in 2023. BEVs increased by almost 50% compared to 2022, now accounting for 2.7% of all cars in use.
