Supreme Court issues notice to West Bengal Governor over inaction in assenting to state assembly bills, including the West Bengal Universities (Amendment) Bill.
The Supreme Court has issued notice to West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose over allegations of inaction in granting assent to bills passed by the state assembly. The petition filed by Sayan Mukherjee challenges the inaction of the Governor in clearing the bills, particularly the West Bengal Universities (Amendment) Bill 2022, which aimed to replace the Governor with the Chief Minister as the chancellor of all state-run universities. The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Principal Secretary to the Governor of West Bengal, the Union of India, and the Principal Secretary of the Department of Higher Education.
