Researchers at ICAR-CMFRI successfully bred golden trevally, a high-value marine fish, in captivity after five years of research, potentially boosting India's mariculture activities.

Researchers at ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) have successfully bred golden trevally, a high-value marine fish, in captivity after five years of research. This breakthrough could boost India's mariculture activities, including sea cage farming, and contribute to wild stock restoration efforts through the sea-ranching initiative. Golden trevally, also known as golden kingfish, has a farm-gate value of Rs 400-500 per kg and is ideal for mariculture due to its faster growth rates, good meat quality, and market demand for both consumption and ornamental purposes.
