Illinois lawmakers propose a bill to require K-12 schools in the state to change Native American mascots by Sept 1, 2027. Over 50 schools currently use such mascots, following New York's 2020 ban and Washington state's requirement for schools to seek permission from nearby tribes. The bill's co-sponsor, Rep. Laura Faver Dias, witnessed divisiveness in her former school with a Native American-themed mascot.
