2022 Sahel cocaine seizures surge by 110x from 2013-2020 average, UN warns of region's growing drug smuggling role.
The UN has warned that the West African Sahel region is becoming an influential drug smuggling route, with drug seizures skyrocketing. In 2022, 1,466 kilograms of cocaine were seized in Mali, Chad, Burkina Faso, and Niger, compared to an average of 13 kilograms between 2013 and 2020. The location of the Sahel makes it a natural transit point for increasing drug production in South America destined for Europe.
