EU antitrust regulators may soon approve Apple's proposal to open NFC technology to competitors for 10 years.
EU antitrust regulators are likely to approve Apple's proposal to open its tap-and-go mobile payments system, Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, to competitors in May. The proposal, which aims to settle a four-year investigation by the EU, allows competitors access to Apple's NFC on iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices, without the need to use Apple Pay or Apple Wallet. Rival mobile wallet app developers would have free access to Apple's NFC technology, independent of Apple Pay or Apple Wallet, based on fair and non-discriminatory criteria. The proposed NFC access would be valid for a 10-year period.
