Cleveland-Cliffs idled its Weirton tinplate facility, potentially ending 115 years of metals manufacturing, after the U.S. International Trade Commission overturned recommendations for tariffs on tin imports.
Cleveland-Cliffs has idled operations at its Weirton tinplate facility, potentially ending 115 years of metals manufacturing in the community. This follows the U.S. International Trade Commission's (ITC) overturning of recommendations to impose tariffs on tin imports from China, Germany, and Canada, as well as halting an investigation of imports from South Korea. As a result, the company's customers chose alternative tin sources, causing the idling of the facility. Around 900 workers were affected, but the company has not made a complete shutdown decision. Union leader Mark Glyptis remains hopeful and continues to fight for the workers and the community.
