2 BC conservation groups object to renewing Alaska's salmon fisheries' "sustainable" MSC certification, claiming interception of at-risk salmon populations.
Two BC conservation groups, SkeenaWild Conservation Trust and Raincoast Conservation Foundation, have filed an objection with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) against renewing Alaska's salmon fisheries' "sustainable" certification. They claim Alaska's fisheries intercept at-risk salmon populations destined for B.C., Washington, and Oregon, and that MSC's evaluator, MRAG Americas, hasn't executed thorough due diligence on the fishery's operations. The MSC certified Alaskan fisheries as sustainable in 2000, with the certification set to expire in 2024.
