The US Army will no longer let commanders decide if soldiers accused of serious crimes leave the service instead of facing trial. This decision follows an investigation by ProPublica, The Texas Tribune, and Military Times, exposing hundreds of soldiers charged with violent crimes administratively discharged instead of court-martialed. The new rule, effective from Saturday, removes commanders' sole authority to grant such discharges.
