Japan has initiated the fifth round of releasing nuclear-contaminated wastewater from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean, despite local and international opposition. Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) began discharging the radioactive wastewater, containing tritium, on April 19. This marks the first round in fiscal 2024 and similar to previous releases, about 7,800 tons of wastewater will be released until May 7. TEPCO ensures that the radioactivity levels meet national standards before discharge.
