Zimbabwean President Mnangagwa grants amnesty to female prisoners, commuting death sentences for long-term death row inmates, and releases life prisoners who have served 20 years, except for specific offenses.
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has granted amnesty to various categories of prisoners ahead of the country's 44th Independence Day, set for April 18. The president has granted full remission of the remaining terms of imprisonment to all female prisoners who will have served two-thirds of their sentences by April 18, and has also commuted death sentences to life imprisonment for prisoners who have been on death row for over 10 years. Inmates serving life sentences will be released if they have served at least 20 years. The amnesty order excludes those convicted of specified offenses such as murder, rape, and treason.
