The Lancet Regional Health Europe links internalized weight stigma to various factors.

20-year study finds people who experienced family or media pressure to lose weight as teenagers, females, non-heterosexual individuals, and those experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage are most at risk of internalized weight stigma. This form of stigma involves people applying negative obesity-related stereotypes to themselves, which can lead to poor mental health, eating disorders, and delayed medical treatment. The study, published in The Lancet Regional Health Europe, is the first to use a large UK sample to examine the issue.
