1.3% of Scottish adults aged 15-64 remain opioid-dependent, despite drug-related deaths doubling between 2011-2020.

A University of Bristol-led study reveals that opioid dependence in Scotland remains stable, with an estimated 1.3% of the adult population aged 15-64 being opioid-dependent. Although drug-related deaths doubled between 2011 and 2020, the opioid-dependent population has remained relatively constant. The research, the first to estimate the number of people dependent on opioids since 2015/2016, found that over 60% of the opioid-dependent population received opioid agonist treatment at least once in 2019/20.
