New York Governor Kathy Hochul announces initiatives to combat retail theft, including stricter penalties, funding for state police officers, and targeting online sellers.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced new initiatives to crack down on organized retail theft and protect frontline retail workers. The new public safety measures will be funded by the state's FY2025 budget. The plan includes stiffer penalties for criminals, with assaulting a retail worker now an automatic felony. It also allows prosecutors to aggregate crimes and targets online sellers who profit from stolen goods. Over $40 million will be used to pay up to 100 state police officers to investigate retail theft in the state.
