15.8 million Afghans face crisis and emergency food insecurity by 2024.

15.8 million Afghans, or 40% of the population, will face crisis and emergency levels of food insecurity by 2024, according to the United Nations (UN) 2023 Afghanistan Annual Results Report. With a majority of the population unable to meet basic needs like healthcare, food, livelihood, and housing, 9 out of 10 people in Afghanistan do not consume enough food, with food costs consuming 89% of household incomes. Afghanistan ranks 114th out of 125 countries in the 2023 Global Hunger Index due to ongoing poverty and economic hardships since the US-led forces' withdrawal in August 2021.
