A University of Otago-led study found that a Housing First approach significantly improved wellbeing for 387 homeless individuals in Aotearoa New Zealand. After five years in the program, there was a 44% reduction in hospitalizations, a 63% reduction in mental health inpatient unit bed nights, and a 73% reduction in mental health residential unit bed nights. Criminal charges decreased by 43%, and incomes increased. The Housing First approach focuses on providing permanent housing and specialist support without preconditions.
