Tourism is a vital driver of economic growth and employs one in ten people worldwide, contributing 3% to the global GDP ($3.3 trillion in 2023). However, it is highly vulnerable to climate change, pandemics, terrorism, and political instability, according to UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis. Addressing the General Assembly's first Sustainability Week, he urged the boosting of sustainable and resilient practices to protect the environment and local economies.
