Soldier Philip McCarthy's conviction for a "punishment beating" during training in 2021 was upheld by the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
Soldier Philip McCarthy was denied a further appeal of his conviction for a "punishment beating" of fellow recruit Jack Canty during training in 2021. The Court of Appeal and Supreme Court both upheld McCarthy's initial conviction, which included a seven-day detention and discharge from the Defence Forces. McCarthy's appeal did not raise any point of law of general public importance and was deemed not to be in the interests of justice for a further appeal.
