The Queensland government, with support from The Nature Conservancy, has purchased the 352,500-hectare Vergemont Station south of Winton for $21m, in one of Australia's largest and most significant land acquisitions. The property, which contains 34 different regional ecosystems, is a key habitat for endangered species. A portion of the property will continue to support existing opal mining operations, while the rest will be designated as a national park.
