High levels of plastic pollution, including PVC pellets, cause death of ocean animal embryos by inhibiting morphogenesis.
New research reveals that high levels of plastic pollution can kill the embryos of a wide range of ocean animals. Scientists tested the effects of PVC pellets, commonly known as "nurdles," on the development of seven species representing all major ocean animal groups. Exposure to high concentrations of PVC pellets prevented healthy development in all seven species, with the main process affected being morphogenesis—an organism developing its shape—and shapeless embryos cannot survive. The study highlights the "potentially catastrophic effects" of rising levels of plastic in the ocean.
