Transmitted through tick or deerfly bites, the bacteria is known to be present in Utah's environment but has not previously caused such mass deaths. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources advises taking precautions such as wearing protective clothing, using insect repellent and checking for ticks after being in brushy areas.
