2023 sees a rise in AI-enabled identity fraud, with Cifas reporting 374,000 fraud cases and urging a multi-sector approach to combat the growing threat.

Fraud prevention group Cifas warns that criminals are increasingly using AI and deepfake technology to steal consumer details, with a rise in AI-enabled identity fraud, including sophisticated phishing scams, deepfake images, videos and audio. Over 374,000 fraud cases were reported in 2023 to the Cifas National Fraud Database, with identity theft remaining the most common type of fraud.
