King's College London study links diverse natural features to improved mental health for up to eight hours, with biodiversity contributing a quarter of positive nature impact.
King's College London study published in Scientific Reports found that spaces with diverse natural features are linked to better mental health, with up to an eight-hour effect. Funded by NIHR and Wellcome, the citizen science study used the Urban Mind app to collect data from nearly 2,000 participants. Results showed that richer environments with trees, birds, plants, and waterways had greater mental well-being benefits, with a quarter of positive nature impact on mental health attributed to biodiversity. The study highlights the importance of policies and practices that support and maintain biodiversity for public mental health.
